Spectrum is an open source instant messaging transport. It allows users to chat together even when they are using different IM networks. It acts as a transport layer between the users as showed in the animation above.

Versions & arches
Use flags of 2.2.1-r2
- doc Add extra documentation (API, Javadoc, etc). It is recommended to enable per package instead of globally
- frotz Enables the Z-Engine backend.
- irc Enables the IRC backend, based on net-im/libcommuni.
- mysql Add mySQL Database support
- postgres Add support for the postgresql database
- purple Enables the libpurple backend, based on net-im/pidgin.
- sms Enables the SMS backend, based on app-mobilephone/smstools.
- +sqlite Add support for sqlite - embedded sql database
- test Enable dependencies and/or preparations necessary to run tests (usually controlled by FEATURES=test but can be toggled independently)
- twitter Enables the Twitter backend.
- xmpp Enable support for Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) formerly known as Jabber
